Best figures by LSG bowlers in the IPL: Mark Wood, Yash Thakur’s impressive spells top list
We are one of the newest teams in the Indian Premier League but our novelty hasn’t stopped us from emerging as one of the most formidable bowling sides in the IPL.
Over the years, our bowlers have come up with some truly special spells, which have turned games in our favour in gazab andaaz.
Our bowlers have consistently delivered clutch performances and this was one of the key reasons why we reached the playoffs in our first two seasons and are playing well in the third.
Here’s a look at the best bowling figures by LSG bowlers in the IPL.
Wood logs 5/14 to uproot DC
We were playing our first match of the IPL 2023 season and incidentally, our first at the Ekana. Batting first, we put up 193/6 in our 20 overs against Delhi Capitals. While it was a decent total to defend, Mark Wood ripped through the DC batting line-up with figures of 5/14 to steer our team to a 50-run victory in front of our home fans.
DC were 40/0 in four overs when Wood was brought into the attack. Wood hit the timber to dismiss opener Prithvi Shaw on the third ball and castled Mitchell Marsh on the very next ball on the 147kmph delivery. He sent back Sarfaraz Khan soon after to reduce Capitals to 48/3.
Bowling the final over of the match, Wood got rid of Axar Patel and Chetan Sakariya to complete his fifer and got our team off to a flying start in the season.
Yash Thakur steps up with 5/30 against GT
Defending a modest 164 in our own backyard against Gujarat Titans, we seemed to be in a spot of bother with GT cruising to 54/0 in the first six overs. Losing pacer Mayank Yadav, who was sidelined due to a side strain after just one over also put us on the backfoot.
We needed a ‘gazab andaaz’ spell to turn the tables on GT and it was Yash Thakur who stepped up with a game-changing performance. His exceptional five-wicket haul secured a 33-run victory for us.
With Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan batting aggressively in the powerplay, we were in dire need of a breakthrough. Yash delivered spectacularly, dismantling Gill’s stumps with a pinpoint yorker in the sixth over.
As the match progressed, GT needed 72 from the last six overs with seasoned batsmen Rahul Tewatia and Vijay Shankar at the crease and the dangerous Rashid Khan yet to bat. Yash rose to the occasion again, crucially dismissing Shankar and Rashid, effectively shifting the momentum.
Despite a late push from Tewatia, who scored a gritty 30 off 25 balls, Yash sealed the deal for us with two wickets in the 19th over, ending the match with remarkable figures of 5/30.
Mohsin Khan’s 4/16 knocks out DC
In a match that saw close to 400 runs scored at the Wankhede, Mohsin Khan’s 4/16 in four overs stood out as we toppled Delhi Capitals in a high-scoring thriller at the Wankhede in our debut season back in 2022.
He struck early with the wicket of David Warner in the third over and got rid of dangerous power-hitters Rishabh Pant and in the 13th over.
DC needed 50 off 24 with five wickets in hand, Mohsin then dealt the Capitals a double blow by removing Rovman Powell and Shardul Thakur and ended his spell with four wickets in four overs. DC eventually fell short by just six runs.
