Kyle Mayers was named in the West Indies squad as a replacement for the injured Brandon King for the remainder of the T20 World Cup 2024.

King was ruled out of the World Cup after he suffered a side strain while batting against England in the Windies’ opening Super 8 match. King had to retire hurt when he was batting on 23 as he injured himself while trying to step out of the crease.

"The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 has approved left-handed batter Kyle Mayers as a replacement for Brandon King in the West Indies squad," an ICC release said.

Though King travelled with the team for the second Super 8 match against the USA, he was ruled out of the marquee event later. Mayers is expected to join the West Indies team on Saturday ahead of their final Super 8 encounter against South Africa on Monday.

Mayers has played 37 T20Is for the West Indies scoring 727 runs at an average of 21.38 and a healthy strike rate of 140.61. He is also a handy medium pacer.

He was also the West Indies’ second-highest run-scorer behind King in the three-match T20I series against South Africa, which took place just before the T20 World Cup 2024.

Mayers enjoyed an excellent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season with us, scoring 379 runs from 13 matches at a strike rate of 144.10. He was also part of our squad for the IPL 2024 season.
